Light At the End of the Tunnel
This was by far one of my favourite songs to perform - something about the last section (perpetual rain…) would put the hairs on the back of my neck on end. It was also one of the hardest for me - singing “no” on an A4 was particularly challenging.
I just wish we had made a “radio edit” version without the self-indulgent guitar solo battle. Sorry guys.
Lyrically - I had gone for drinks with a friend the night before (Liam Thatcher) and I was discussing the difficulty of writing lyrics and that he had been reading that some of the most popular songs are based around common-use phrases.
So while they were jamming, I wrote these lyrics on the fly with this idea in mind. Did I mention that lyrics were never my strong point?
If I recall correctly, this was born out of a 30 second snippet Richard brought along called “the finger tapping song” based on the guitar method used.
The “wind” at the beginning was created using a guitar pedal with no input (wah wah?), and the talking in the background was made from having us all read sections of a newspaper and bits were cherry picked, including Richard laughing manically.
